Muhammad Haroon Jawed Khatri: A Green Revolution in Karachi

Muhammad Haroon Jawed Khatri is not just a name but a beacon of hope for a greener Karachi. Since 2017, he has been at the forefront of a noble cause that aims to combat the increasing heat in Karachi through large-scale plantation drives. His journey, marked by learning, dedication, and unwavering commitment, has inspired many and continues to grow stronger with each passing year.

The Beginning of a Green Journey
In 2017, Haroon Khatri, along with his brother Saleem Jawed Khatri, took the first step towards a greener Karachi. Armed with a personal investment of 10,000 rupees, they embarked on their first plantation drive, using small plants. However, they quickly realized that their lack of experience led to a significant oversight. Within a week, it became apparent that small plants were not ideal for long-term survival in Karachi’s harsh environment.

Guidance came from experienced elders and experts who advised them to use larger plants to ensure better survival rates and a higher chance of growth. This valuable lesson led Haroon and his brother to reassess their strategy and resume their plantation efforts with renewed vigor in 2018.

Building a Movement
With their newfound knowledge, Haroon and Saleem began collecting donations from their personal network, including family, friends, and relatives. Despite the limited funds, Haroon continued to invest his own money to ensure the success of the plantation drive. The initiative soon gained momentum, and in 2018, Dr. Muzzammil Khatri joined the cause. Together, they organized their second plantation drive as a team, planting 4-5 large plants that have since grown into trees, providing much-needed shelter, oxygen, and a healthier environment for the local community.

Collaborations and Setbacks
The success of these initial efforts opened doors for Haroon to collaborate with various organizations and welfare groups focused on plantation efforts. However, like many initiatives worldwide, the plantation drive faced a setback due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the team to pause their activities temporarily.

A Renewed Commitment
As the heat in Karachi reached unbearable levels in June and July 2024, Haroon and his team decided to resume their plantation efforts. They planted five trees in the Leemarket and Bhimpura areas of Karachi just before Bakra Eid, marking their return to action. The upcoming 14 August 2024 plantation drive is set to be one of their biggest efforts yet, with plans to plant 14-15 trees in the Bhimpura area.

Haroon’s Vision for Karachi
Haroon Khatri’s vision for Karachi is simple yet profound. He believes that the temperature difference between areas with low and high tree density is stark. He often compares the old city areas of Karachi, which lack sufficient trees, with more affluent areas that benefit from extensive greenery. His message is clear: every individual must take responsibility for planting trees to create a sustainable environment for future generations.

The Green Karachi Team
Haroon’s organization, Green Karachi, is supported by a dedicated team that includes Dr. Muzzammil Khatri, Saleem Jawed, Zohaib Patel, and Bilal Musani. These team members are actively involved in collecting donations from shops and doorsteps, raising awareness through videos and content, and participating fully in all plantation activities.

Muhammad Haroon Jawed Khatri’s journey is a testament to what can be achieved through determination, teamwork, and a genuine concern for the environment. As he and his team gear up for the 14 August 2024 plantation drive, their efforts serve as an inspiration for all Karachiites to contribute to a greener, healthier city. Haroon’s dream is not just to plant trees but to plant hope for a better future, one tree at a time.
