Asif Ali Zardari Invites Shanghai Electric to Expand Investment in Pakistan

President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has appealed to Shanghai Electric to invest in Pakistan energy and power sector and resolve current issues.
The investment request aims to improve the power sector in Pakistan and provide the country with a modern transmission network.
President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday met with Shanghai Electric Chairman Wu Lei and extended an invitation to invest in Pakistan. The president was accompanied by his daughter Asifa Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman and the president’s son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Senator Saleem Mandviwala during his visit to China.
Wu Lei briefed that Shanghai Electric is already working in Pakistan’s energy sector. Projects in coal, nuclear energy and power plants are already in place.
President Zardari commended Chairman Shanghai Electric for his current efforts, and indicated further investment and expansion in the Thar Coal Project, which the company is already working on.
President Zardari emphasized that whatever problems exist or may arise in the future between the company and Pakistan, they should be resolved through mutual cooperation. The company chief also appreciated the Chinese workers in Pakistan and their security.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between President Zardari and Shanghai Electric, aimed at establishing the first coal gasification and fertilization projects in Thar, Sindh. The Thar Coal Gasification Project will meet the energy needs of Sindh and Pakistan and facilitate the agricultural sector.
