The University of Karachi, in collaboration with Voice of South Asia (VOSA), recently held a meaningful ceremony at the Department of Mass Communication to kick off a major tree plantation initiative. As part of VOSA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, the project aims to plant 4,000 trees at the back of the department, with WWF overseeing the planting process.
The event, which took place at Sarwar Naseem Hall, was simple yet impactful. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Dr. Ismat Ara, Chairperson of the Department of Mass Communication, and featured Zahid Rana, CEO of Voice of South Asia, as the chief guest. Alongside his Karachi bureau team, Zahid Rana shared his heartfelt appreciation for the people of Pakistan and reaffirmed his commitment to addressing local challenges while promoting social values.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was Zahid Rana’s announcement of an exciting internship program for Mass Communication students. The three-month paid internship will offer students hands-on experience in digital news, international reporting, and freelancing platforms. Successful interns will receive a certificate from the US Bureau, with the possibility of future employment opportunities within the institution.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Dr. Ismat Ara expressed her gratitude to Zahid Rana for supporting the tree plantation drive and launching the internship program. In recognition of his contributions, she presented him with a shield of appreciation from the Department of Mass Communication.
The event also included a tour of the department’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the TV studio, radio station, and computer lab, where Dr. Ismat Ara and Zahid Rana discussed the department’s ongoing efforts to provide students with valuable practical experience.
